Is your Hairstyle Making you Sick?
Indian tradition requires women to wear their hair long, and tied up. While other castes were allowed to partially tie their hair, Brahmin women, (the priests and academicians) were mandated to keep it completely tied. Everything changes with time though. There are many things that are characteristic of kali yuga. An obsession with hair **(reference below) – judging a person’s beauty by their external appearance, especially hair – is one of them. If only this was limited to merely being a fashion statement, though. Problem is, it affects you far more than you realize.
How Cutting Hair Affects You
Among indigenous cultures all over the world, people didn’t cut their hair. Cutting hair was a sign of slavery, meant to decrease their power and capacity to think. The crown of our head contains about a thousand nerve endings, exchanging electric charge with the universe through the hair. Left to itself, hair grows to its natural length and stops. Allowing hair to attain its full, mature length, increases production of phosphorous, calcium, and vitamin D, which enter the lymphatic and eventually spinal fluid through the two ducts on the top of the brain. This ionic change creates more efficient memory and leads to greater physical energy, improved stamina, and patience.
Sixth Sense & Clarity of Thought
Hair is an extension of the nervous system. It can be correctly seen as exteriorized nerves, a type of highly evolved ‘feelers’ or ‘antennae’ that transmit vast amounts of energy and important information to the brain stem, the limbic system, and the frontal lobes – the part of the brain utilized during meditation and imagination. When hair is cut, it takes approximately three years for the tips to be able to transmit information again. It is interesting to note that a study performed during the Vietnam war found that swift American Indians with a strong sixth sense, lost many of their abilities after cropping their hair short from the usual waist-length when hired by the army.
Grounding
Long hair reaches towards the earth, bringing a grounding to the energies in the crown chakra. In an age where grounding is already so weak, this is a great help. Shorter hair takes one away from one’s roots – one often finds that women who wear their hair short are fairly rebellious by nature, with a strong desire to break away from the norm – a desire to disconnect with their societal roots. Chopping their hair off helps because it helps them do just that. One of the disadvantages here is a poorer intuition and grounding, but there’s more, since women with short hair are far more likely to leave their hair open all the time.
The Dangers of Leaving Hair Open
I’ve heard that many grandmothers advise young girls never to step out with their hair open. When I mentioned this to a gifted psychic, she told me “Oh Ashwita, just ask a woman to leave her hair open and go out for a stroll at night. She’ll be back with at least a couple of spirits clinging to her. More if she wears perfume. ” Now, ‘spirits’ can be a tricky subject for many. If it is something that makes you uncomfortable, just think of it as picking up dirty, negative energy. Even from the physical perspective, one has to only leave the hair open for a short while to observe how much dirt and grime it can pick up. Think of the energy then.
The tendency to pick up negative energy increases by leaps and bounds at night, especially out in the open. Even during sleep, women who leave their hair open are extremely prone to picking up negative energies as this is when the system is at its most vulnerable. All this negative energy being picked up by the hair leads to an increase in feelings such as depression, worry, increased sexual thoughts leading to promiscuity. One of the first areas of a woman’s body to get affected is the uterus – and we find irregular periods one of the most common problems today. In multiple cases, I’ve found women living in a house full of intense negative energies (or a spirit) to start having irregular periods the moment they move in, and the periods regularizing the moment a proper cleansing is performed. Sounds crazy, right?
The second place it affects a woman is the thyroid gland – another extremely common problem today. Hair affects the pineal and pitutary glands – both of which control the rest of the glands in the body. Messing with the energy of these two glands obviously leaves the whole system unstable.
Tying up the Hair
There is a reason why sages knot their hair at the top – it creates a gentle pressure on the crown chakra and activates it, increasing access to cosmic consciousness. The best hairstyle for a woman is to tie her hair in a bun at the back of the head, just where it starts to curve inwards (below the occipital lobe). This activates the Bindu Chakra, the center for vitality, creativity and rejuvenation. This spot when energized, also heals depression, nervousness, feelings of anxiety and an oppressive feeling within the heart. A slight pressure on the Bindu Chakra gives rise to a spontaneous feeling of happiness.
The Effect on Men
All the men I have seen till today who had fully grown hair, had great energy. However, with hair that is ‘long’ – maybe shoulder length for example, I have found most men to have far worse energies than women with the same length of hair. I assume this could be because of a lack of proper care and regular washing, because energetically men are less susceptible to negative energies than women. Having said that, I have so far met only two men who had shoulder-length hair and still had clean energy. In my experience, men are better off with really short hair, unless they grow it to its complete length.
What about Bald People?
When people naturally bald, there’s nothing to think about because that is nature at work. Often these people are highly intelligent, and I think of it as an overactive crown ‘burning’ the roots of the hair away. I’ve seen many people shave their heads off for various reasons and most often this destroys their energy field completely. The only case where shaving one’s head is beneficial, is when one has a strong sadhana – spiritual practice – and wants to remove all connection with one’s roots so that a part of the identity is destroyed. When such a tonsure is done, it is great for the energies, and one can easily witness this glow on a monk’s face.
Please do share with us if you’ve had any such experiences too.

Hello mam. Thank you again for a wonderful articlem. But it worries me as I have never kept long hair all through my life. It’s always shoulder length n a ponytail is the most comfortable thing for me as I rarely leave my hair open. I am very bad at maintaining long hair and now I am worried after reading this article. What can I do now? Keeping long hair seems like a distant dream to me. Please help.
Dear Sulagna,
If you are keeping your hair tied most of the time, you are protecting yourself energetically. The only thing you lose out on is the intuitive aspect. It’s not too worrisome, especially considering nobody has these qualities today anyway. Plus, Reiki will also help. We know already that Reiki transforms a lot of aspects through regular practice. If growing your hair is required for your role in this life, you will automatically feel like doing it eventually. So just let it go, and if you ever feel like growing your hair, don’t question that, just go for it. Until then, relax!
I am 30 now and till 3 years back, I used to keep my hair tied in a palait. Then I wanted to become a little stylish, and I started keeping my hair open all the time. I have had a lot of hair loss since the last 3 years and my hair volume is so less that I don’t feel like tying it up as a plait because it looks so thin. Moreover, a plait feels very tight and uncomfortable.
I have also got some hormonal imbalance because of which I have hormonal acne. I have had this problem since the last 15 years.
Has my hair loss got to do something with keeping my hair open. Will it be fine if I tie it as a pony instead of a complete plait?
Yes, leaving your hair open dirties up your scalp a lot more which would increase hair loss. If a plait feels tight and uncomfortable, it is a sign that your scalp – and therefore your crown chakra is overactive and oversensitive. Which would also increase hair loss. I would suggest plenty of grounding – spend time resting in nature, sitting at the foot of trees and asking them to deepen your connection with the earth, get massages, apply a bit of mustard oil on your feet just before going to sleep (no it does not stink and no it won’t stain your bedsheets). Improved grounding should also start improving your skin.
If a plait is uncomfortable, try tying it up in a bun. Ponytail is not the best, but it is definitely better than open hair. If it doesn’t hurt, you could tie your hair up loosely using a clasp, that looks pretty cool.
Interesting…my instinct has always been to bun, tie, braid, pin, etc since I quit cutting my hair short. Trimming seems to help growth, especially after the new moon (for me). I have noticed increased hair growth and my hair does not thin too much (even though I am over 60 and noticed my mother’s hair thinning after that time). Any pointers on brittle nails? Though not quite so bad since I am a massage therapist and have oil or cream on my hands a lot of the time, however now I cannot have long nails as it is not professional to scratch your clients!
Very insightful. Never thought hair has such a prominence. I have a hairy body and my hair on top of my head grows really fast. I have hair cuts every 20 days approx. What does it indicate?
Doesn’t indicate anything, you probably have a good level of testosterone that’s all 😀
I have observed that sensitive men with too much body hair pick up lots of negative energy and some such men prefer to shave it off and they feel much better. Sounds feminine I know, but it really helps them feel lighter and less weighed down.
Thanks for sharing, Melonee. Not sure about the brittle nails, it could be due to various reasons – nails are a very strong indication of the state of health, you might want to look up what brittle nails might indicate.
Hi Ashwita,
I read your article. It was full of info and insight.. I’ve one question.
As you know, currently my hairs are very short..like I wear boy cut there days. What
shall I do to protect myself from negativity?
Also I’ve started wearing vibhuti to brow chakra .(I was always wearing vibhti while
going out, but not on brow chakra.)
I don’t know if it makes sense but I’ve come to notice that whenever i cut my hair even about 3-4 inches i fell sick and it’s not just common cold and flu but a series of disease after every month or two (my hair length is around my hips)
so do you think my hair and health is somewhat connected I would really like to hear your views
thankyou
Thank you for sharing, this is so useful. I will start trying my hair more regularly.
