Reiki Self Healing
More and more, I find people contacting me and asking how to practice Reiki, hence this article. It is important to get attuned by a Reiki teacher to start your Reiki practice, and in a typical class, there should also be a demonstration or practice of how to heal yourself as well as others.
Self healing is a very important daily routine if you wish to be healthier, as well as an effective Reiki channel. The exact self healing practice varies from teacher to teacher. Some teach a much more comprehensive 27 point healing, but in our lineage we’ve always practiced the 13 point healing, and this is what I cover here. Please buy our kindle/ print book on Reiki for much more detailed information on Reiki – Healing Through Reiki.
So here’s how we do it.
Before the healing.
If possible, it is a good idea to remove any artificial jewelry, belts, shoes, and dress comfortably. Of course, if you are practicing Reiki in a public space, this step is not required.
The Posture
You can practice self healing either seated or lying down. I usually advise my students to sit, since most people fall asleep midway if they lie down, and the healing remains incomplete. If you’re sitting, sit either on a chair or cross-legged on a mat. Make sure your legs are not crossed if you are on a chair or lying down (The lotus and similar positions are fine).
The Positions
This is what we recommend: We have seven major chakras. These chakras extend out in the front, as well as the back, and both points are important for healing. Since the crown goes straight up, we heal that right at the top. So we end up with the crown chakra, and the rest of the chakras in front as well as back positions. 13 points in all.
Additional Positions: We highly recommend that you also include the ears, knees and feet on a daily basis. If you have problems with your shoulder, include that too. If you have confidence issues, or are unable to stand up for yourself, heal your thighs as well.
The Timing
One of the biggest doubts most channels have is how long to heal each chakra. It is a simple answer – trust your gut. Once you’ve placed your hands on a position for some time, ask yourself if you feel like moving to the next position. If you still need healing, you will feel like keeping your hands there for longer. If not, there might be a feeling of restlessness.
Do not time each position, but make a note of the time when you start, and if when you’re done you have taken less than 35 min, repeat a few points. In my observation, this is the minimum time required for a basic cleansing of energies. If you are seeking deeper healing, then about an hour or more is good. There is no upper limit, you can practice Reiki for as many hours in a day as you like.
The Best Time to Heal
Sunsets or later are the best times to heal. Right before sleeping is also a good time.
The Process
To heal ourselves through Reiki, we need to place our hands on various points and Reiki them. Please visit this link for detailed instructions.

hi Ashwita,
I learnt reiki first and second degree from you. I have a query:
sometimes I find it really difficult to take out 1 hr for thorough reiki practice because of my work schedule. is there any way which I can help me to finish daily session in 15-20 minutes once in a while?
thanks
Nidhi
30-40 min of Reiki is enough to sustain, and if you do an additional 15 min in the morning then you get many more benefits. If you’re low on time once in a while then 20-25 min of healing is ok, but on a regular basis this will leave you with an energy deficit.
Hello!
I am a second level Reiki Practitioner. It has almost made by Psoriasis non existent. I am extremely grateful. My question is whether doing twenty four points Reiki every day , with each chakra being focussed on for about 3 minutes , is a good idea and does it keep increasing the Reiki healing power? My second question is whether a special Reiki done on a point which was problematic but is not so , can lead to any fresh healing crisis?
Regards
A Banerjee
Yes 24 points healing daily will help you develop your system. However, I have found that instead of spending that much time in one shot, spending about 15 min healing in the morning and 35-45 min healing in the evening is the most beneficial. So maybe you could split your practice up?
Cleansing response – sounds unlikely to me but not impossible, so if you’ve experienced it then it may be what happened, but if you’re asking whether healing an extra point might trigger cleansing, then chances are low.
